30th anniversary of the first NHB school in Kadambas
On 30 April 1995, a dream came true both for the four police officers from Beilngries, who had set up the Nepal aid organisation, and for the small village of Kadambas, about 80 km east of Kathmandu.
The Shree Kali Devi Secondary High School was inaugurated in the presence of the then German Ambassador, Dr Scholtysek, and almost 1000 guests from the surrounding villages. This was due to the fortunate circumstance that the four of them met Rajendra Giri, who came from this village. He got the small group in Kadambas to invest their donations in this school. The old school was dilapidated, far too small and was wrongly called a school. It was more like a dwelling. The worst possible place to learn.
So the members of Nepalhilfe Beilngries decided to build a new school with 10 classrooms for around 450 pupils in faraway Germany. This project was finally realised between 1993 and 1995 and after the opening, pupils from up to 5 km away flocked to the new school.
This was the beginning of a success story, as a further 17 schools were to follow in the Sindhupalchok district alone over the next few years. To date, Nepalhilfe has been able to build 33 schools throughout Nepal thanks to donations from Germany. .More than 10,000 children currently attend NHB schools.
To mark this occasion founding members Michaela and Micheal Rebele traveled to Nepal. This memorable anniversary was celebrated together with our local representatives, Shyam Pandit, Hari Adhikari and Gupta Bandahari.
Shyam Pandit was the first headmaster in Kadambas for many years before we brought him to Kathmandu as project coordinator for the NHB.
