10 years after the devastating earthquake of 25 April 2015
On 25 April 2015, an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale shook the Himalayan state, killing almost 10,000 people. More than 20,000 were injured and over 100,000 people were left homeless. The epicentre was in the Sindhupalchok district, where almost all NHB schools are located.. 12 were completely destroyed at the time, and 5 more were severely damaged..
It was not until 2016 that reconstruction could begin, after the Nepalese government had improved building regulations with regard to earthquake safety. Until then, thousands of pupils had to endure up to four years in makeshift classrooms.
By 2019, within three years, we were able to get all damaged and destroyed schools back up and running. It was only thanks to numerous additional donations at the time that it was possible to accomplish this feat.
Today, we would like to remember this difficult time for the people of Nepal, many of whom are still living in temporary corrugated iron huts or similar shelters 10 years later!
