Thulosirubari – Shree Setidevi Secondary School (2007/2018)
The school in Sindhupalchok district is one of the largest in the region and has its origins in 2009. We call it the ‘Gerlinde and Ralf School’ after Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and Ralf Dujmovits. Both contributed significantly to the financing and came to the mountain village for the opening. As with many other buildings, the earthquake in 2015 destroyed the entire building complex. In 2018, the new school was handed over. It is not only one of our largest facilities, but also one of the most outstanding in terms of its exposed location on a mountain ridge. The small town of Thulosirubari gave it its name. In its early days, a mighty three-storey building stood on the site and almost 900 children went in and out of it. But this, like many of our other facilities, fell victim to the 2015 earthquake and had to be completely rebuilt – and thus made earthquake-proof. Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and Ralf Dujmovits continued to provide significant financial support. The Cologne-based journalist and mountaineering expert Stefan Nestler, a close friend of the duo, also got energetically involved and raised funds through his blog ‘School up’. Since the opening in spring 2018, three two-storey buildings, including a sanitary building, have been standing on the old site. Nestler and Dujmovits took advantage of a trip to Nepal to attend the opening. The grounds are rounded off by a playground and sports field, a stage for school events and a small garden. The school also has a special feature by Nepalese standards: wooden floors in the rooms for the youngest children. A generously equipped computer room and the obligatory library complete the facilities.
